Little Miss M | Fresh 48 Newborn Session | Fort Collins Newborn Photographer

Lying there in the bassinet, her dark, downy hair still wet, her dark eyes surprisingly alert, her hand clutching and unclutching at the soft swaddling blanket, is the image of perfection. She has just had the first bath of her life, an event which she cried through, making her dismay known to all the world.

Unknown hands, gentle though they were, lifted and unswaddled and washed despite all her protests and all the while she searched for the sweet, familiar hands that meant she was in her favorite place to be. All her short life, the few hours that it has been, that is where she has wanted to find herself. As far she knows, that is home. Wherever they are, that is where she wants to be.

Mother; father. Their arms. Oh, there they are. Take your pictures; smile and whisper and coo. This is where I’m meant to be. She has nothing to express these thoughts but snuffles and sighs and squeaks, but they are enough. Mom and Dad are as content as she.

A fresh 48 session captures a baby within the first forty-eight hours after birth. It is a great alternative to birth photography and to traditional posed newborn photos. It captures the reality and the raw emotions of parenting, showing all of the movement, the stillness, the mess, the patience, the laughter, the tears, the pride, the humility, the exhaustion, and the wonder that is parenting.

It was so awesome to get the chance to capture these moments with these parents after the birth of their second daughter. They are such humble people who only want the best for their family. After catching baby’s first bath and some peaceful moments with just the three of them, we were joined by big sister, who was staying with grandma. Watching this family interact - from the proud way Dad showed the world his new daughter, to the tender caresses of Mom, to the wonderment of Big Sister at having a new friend and future playmate, was such a blessing.

Parenting is not perfect - at least not all the time. But there are glimpses of perfection that can be captured at just the right time. There can be moments of complete tranquility, those times when you hold your child in wonder and watch their tiny face as they sleep in your arms. So quiet; perhaps a tiny sigh or smile as their little pink face presses against your chest. They are so dependent upon you; at that moment in time, you are literally their whole world and they are your heaven on earth - they are perfect.
